Lawson Lowe and the Alabaster Slab
In 1883, Alfred Edward Lawson Lowe wrote a letter to a local newspaper describing an alabaster slab that he had seen in Gedling church in 1866 and suggested that it may have commemorated Francis Lovel.
Lowe was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries and had written several articles on memorials so he can be considered a reliable witness.
His suggestion that the slab commemorated Lovel is based on the Latin date which is the year of the battle and the appearance of the lower part of the legs of a man wearing armour.
